Usually we teachers make our students plunge into a topic to write about. To worsen the situation, we suggest a topic that is ethical and the poor students are expected to come up with a well-organized essay!!!! Thanks God we are not expecting them to write an essay that is empty from grammatical mistakes!!!
The issue of approaching writing in teaching methodology is not conventional or a one-way approach. It is in fact a complicated field through which teachers, schooling, and students themselves play an important part. As for teachers, I guarantee that most English teachers hate teaching writing either of running away from the disastrous results or lack of effective teaching strategies. Concerning schooling, i am sure that if we are ready to teach writing interactively we will be stuck with the difficulties and indifference of the administration in supporting us with the adequate materials and sources that enable us to achieve our objectives. Thus we end up teaching writing superficially because we are not euipped with the necessary tools that encourage discussion, and uilding background before even letting the student touch the pencil to scratch the first thought. You may come and tell me that there are schools which provide such opportunity, and i will tell you that i challenge you to bring one public school that does that. As for the students' environment, the students themselves are not equipped by neither language nor background knowledge about any ethical topic or even up-to date field. This lack of culture is due to the lack of reading and the indifference on the part of their parents.
Therefore, our mission as teachers is not easy at all. Personally, i used to wander where i can begin from? What can i do to foster reading? How can i bring change? I admit that i ran away whenever i thought about that issue. But no more! I have come up with an approach that is still under test but once i experiment it i will write it here as a reference for me and a suggestion for you... you may as well compare it with yours. And this is the reason why i have launced this site.
